The YWCA of Darwin has been operating since 1969 and became incorporated under the Associations Act in 1977. Like many YWCAs around the world, the initial focus of the organisation was to provide accommodation to young women, and to that end, Banyan View Lodge was established in Mitchell Street in 1974, just before Cyclone Tracey. The intention was to provide safe and affordable accommodation for young women who had come to Darwin for work.
The YWCA of Darwin has expanded to provide a diverse range of programs that address the needs of different groups in the community. The YWCA of Darwin is a feminist organisation with a social justice agenda. We are committed to:
